How at-home teeth whitening saved me from an expensive dental procedure

Whitening strips and charcoal toothbrushes

Since high school the extent of my at-home teeth whitening experience was the whitening strips. I don’t have super sensitive teeth, so they did the job, but honestly I always hated how they felt and didn’t always feel like I could just go about my day with them in my mouth because they would slip off and then I’d have this rubber mess.

When I finally gave up on the whitening strips a few years ago, I started using a charcoal toothbrush which was pretty awesome and definitely kept my teeth white, however, the toothbrush itself didn’t do the “cleaning” job a toothbrush should be doing and it seemed like a real pain to brush my teeth with two brushes….that’s way too high maintenance...I mean I go most days without even putting makeup on or brushing my hair - don’t judge - you know you didn’t brush your hair today either.

I sometimes thought about trying out the charcoal toothpaste, but honestly the fact that it’s powder just sounds WAY too messy. I need something that is guaranteed mess free.

Needless to say, I didn’t have a teeth whitening routine down and it was always something in the back of my mind that I wanted to look into more, but never really made the time to do.

Enter Smile-Brilliant

When Smile-Brilliant showed up in my inbox, I realized it was finally time to stop putting teeth whitening on the back burner and to commit to finding a solution that worked and felt like self-care rather than some annoying chore.

What appealed to me about Smile-Brilliant is that it felt like such an uplevel compared to the whitening strips. I mean, you have whitening trays that are literally custom to you.

I was a little nervous about how easy it would be to do the setup process of getting the molds done and all of that but it was actually surprisingly easy!

How the at-home teeth whitening saved me hundreds of dollars

So you’re probably wondering how this at-home teeth whitening ended up saving me from a costly dental procedure.

I was taking my before pictures for this blog post and for the first time in who knows how long I actually was looking at my teeth CLOSELY. I’ve always had great teeth (humble brag), and have gone to the dentist twice a year my whole life….with the exception of the past year.

I figured since I have great teeth (literally didn’t have a cavity until age 28) that missing two cleanings wasn’t the end of the world.

So back to taking the before pictures, I noticed that my gums were looking really strange and my front bottom teeth had something off about them too and I literally booked a dentist appointment for that next day because I was FREAKED OUT.

I went to the dentist and they checked it out and $400 later they told me that if I had waited any longer, they would have had to do some expensive procedure regarding my gums, but they were able to take care of it because it wasn’t too late yet.

Also this was a big wake up call to how shitty my insurance is now that I quit corporate / am too old to be on my parent’s but that’s a whole different blog post!

After the dental scare

After the dental scare and everything was all cleaned up, I sent the molds in to get my trays back and to finally start the whitening process.

I loved how the trays actually just fit perfectly in your mouth and you can actually go about your day with them in without feeling like just moving your head slightly is going to make them come off.

Teeth-Whitening is Self-Care

Being on a daily self-care kick, this was the perfect thing to do for self-care at night. With Smile-Brilliant, there are two steps. The first is the whitening and then the second is the desensitizing gel.

I would do my night time skin care routine and then put in the whitening trays for an hour while I wrapped up anything I need to finish up for the night (I’m a night owl and a lot of my work is done at night).

Then, I would do the desensitizing gel for about 40 minutes and during this time I would read or journal.

It’s such an easy way to get your Instagramable smile back on track while still getting settled in before bed.
