My Favorite Cold Remedies
Yeppppp, it's that time of year where all of a sudden we wake up and are desperate for cold remedies.
This is the second time this winter I'm quickly going to my cold-busting go-to's and my lovely cousin messaged me yesterday asking for them, so what better time than now to write up a blog post on them.
Before getting into it...
Ok, so we all know that you can't actually totally cure a cold right? So the key here is that these remedies make it so that your cold symptoms last 1-3 days instead of 5-12.
Before discovering what works as my Cold Busting Toolkit, my colds would seriously last almost a month. I'd have a lingering cough for what seemed link forever.
What was seriously even worse than that when it came to colds was that I couldn't take normal cold medicine. I basically need to take children's dosages of cold medicine because adult dosages make me feel sooo woozy and what I assume feeling high must be like.
I would end up feeling worse from the cold meds than the actual cold was making me feel.
>> Sidenote story >>> One year in college during sorority recruitment week I had the most insane cold and because I couldn't be blowing my nose every five seconds because I was talking to potential new members, I had to give into the DayQuil. I got so woozy throughout the day from the medicine that my friends told me I was getting weirder and weird in how I was acting. Ummm seriously not good when I'm trying to convince someone to join my sorority.... I started to lose my balance and realized that should mean I need to excuse myself, but in true sorority fashion, the girl in charge told me that I couldnt leave. Finally I couldn't stand up straight any longer and when I tripped going up to the starirs, that seemed to be convincing enough that I should not be recruiting anyone.
Now onto my fave cold remedies and my cold-busting toolkit.
The Tool Kit
Remedy 1: Cold Calm
This is a must-have. I try to always be stocked up on this so I can take it as soon as I get my first sniffle. It's a homeopathic way to relieve your cold symptoms and I've noticed that for me it shortens the length of my cold by far if I stick taking it for a day or two.
This stuff seriously works and here's proof: When I went on my first date with Sam, I had that nastiest cold. The worst. And obviously I did not want to be the gross girl who was cold on her first date. So I took Cold Calm the day before, the morning of, and 1 hour before the date. He never knew that night that I had been fighting a cold, thank God!
Remedy 2: Garlic
Before you freak out, how badly do you want to kick your cold symptoms goodbye? If you're serious about it, then you're just going to have to suck this one up. It's worth it because raw Garlic has antibacterial properties that make it an awesome remedy.
Here's how I use garlic:
+ Cold-busting tea: heat up hot water and add lemon and 1-2 garlic cloves and let it steep for about 5-10 minutes (sometimes I add cayenne)
+ Swallow a clove whole as if it were a pill
+ Eat it raw (caution it's SPICY and intense but the intensity does make you forget you have a cold for a bit)
+ Put it in bone broth
Remedy 3: Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar (it's gotta be the one with the mother like Bragg) alkalizes your body which means that it's balanced and able to easily fight off the bad stuff that make you feel sick.
How I use it: + Take a shot of it in the morning + Add it to my tea after it has steeped
Remedy 4: Bone Broth
I loooooove soup so it only makes sense that bone broth is one of my fave cold remedies. Since you can throw it in the freezer, you can always have it on hand.
Bone broth by itself isn't always the tastiest but I really like Bonafide's that you can by at Whole Foods or I like to jazz it up with foods that are also anti-inflammatory and bacteria-busting.
My bone broth recipe: 1-2 cups of bone broth 1 lemon squeezed 3 garlic cloves (whole) 1 bay leaf (optional) Red pepper flakes to taste
Let this heat up for about 5 minutes and pour it in a mug. Add a splash of apple cider vinegar. Drink up!
Remedy 5: Oregano Oil
Ok this is even more intense than raw garlic, but you gotta do what you gotta do, right? It does a great job of boosting your immune system and is known for fighting infections.
How I use it:
+ 2 drops of oregano oil in water and take it like a shot. Be careful because if it gets on your lips it can give you a burning sensation
+ Rub it on the bottom of your feet before going to bed
Remedy 6: Supplements
I'm not a major supplement taker but probiotics and vitamin D go a long way for me. Melatonin is also perfect for helping you fall asleep.
Also, CBD chocolates help with inflammation which will help you feel better faster. I love these from Sakara.
